"I don't know any of the 'Vanished' children, but I feel for the families and their pain"
La Verne, Calif.
Thank you for running the excellent story about young people who have gone missing. These kids need to have their faces put out there more often. And I firmly believe there should be more serious consequences for people who abduct and abuse children.
Schuylkill Haven, Pa.
Being the founder of the blog Black and Missing But Not Forgotten, I was happy to see that your cover included two missing blacks. It's a relief to see that someone knows it's not just whites who vanish. The disparity of coverage on missing persons is a problem, so please keep up the good work.
I am horrified by what happened at Fort Hood. What is difficult to fathom is that students who exhibit violent tendencies are usually taken more seriously than Maj. Nidal Hasan. That man raised many red flags, and yet no one took any action. My heart goes out to the families of all the victims of this massacre.
I applaud the celebrities who have the financial means to help the less fortunate. But have we forgotten about our own country? The recession has left so many folks hungry and out on the streets, and yet Alicia Keys is in Africa helping those people. We need more homeless shelters and food banks here. Let's try to get Americans back on their feet before we take on other countries.
Demi Moore looks great for her age, especially if she has not had any plastic surgery, which I doubt. The scary thing is now she looks almost exactly like Courteney Cox Arquette Arquette. Yikes!
I was disappointed that you would feature Demi Moore as being 47 and "hotter than ever." It's easy to be gorgeous when you have access to Botox, plastic surgery and a personal trainer.
Ethan Zohn is to be commended for facing his struggles so bravely. His words and actions will certainly inspire and enlighten others. My own husband suffered from an incurable form of cancer, but he never gave in to self-pity. Courage is a necessary virtue in the fight against this insidious disease.
Alta Loma, Calif.
HUNGRY NO MORE
"After reading this heartbreaking story, I can't stop the tears," reader Kristen Macari of San Diego says of our story on the Jackson brothers, who were starved by their adoptive parents before being rescued in 2003. "The cruelty those boys experienced is beyond measure." Readers heaped praise on the couple who adopted the three youngest boys; Jennifer Woody of Greensboro, N.C., writes, "James and Amber Parrish are two gracious people who show us how society should be." Many were also outraged that Vanessa Jackson, the boys' former adoptive mother, received only a seven-year prison term. "That is shocking," says Heather Davis of Little Elm, Texas, "considering the abuse and ruined lives she and her late husband left in their wake." Mrs. Jackson has been denied parole twice but, having served four years of her sentence, will be released from jail next April.
