Tiger Woods & Elin Nordegren

WORLDS APART

Swinging faster than a nine iron are the rumors around Elin Nordegren and Tiger Woods since their scandal broke late November. Did she knock out two of his teeth? Is he in rehab for sex and drug addiction? Will the divorce net her $300 million? Has she hired a detective to determine his worth? Speculation ranges from the touching (he visited his father's grave on Christmas Eve) to the absurd (he's been on an African safari). The truth: Elin celebrated New Year's Eve and her 30th birthday the next day with her twin sister in the French Alps. Police assert Tiger's only injury was a fat lip. Friends claim he hasn't ventured far from Florida and, adds another source, rehab reports are "absurd." "Tiger is getting his head straight," says an insider. "[He's] praying and meditating and doing what he needs to do for his family and his well-being."

WHERE IS TIGER?

Reports have him everywhere from his yacht to New York City and Dubai. One place he can definitely be seen? Buff and shirtless on the cover of February's Vanity Fair—in photos taken in 2006 by Annie Leibovitz.

Rihanna & Matt Kemp

NEW COUPLE ALERT!

After being introduced by friends in November, Rihanna and L.A. Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp have been getting a lot closer, from a Dec. 22 trip to L.A.'s outdoor mall the Grove to a cozy vacation in Cabo San Lucas on Jan. 3. "They really like each other," says a source. Rihanna, 21, thinks Kemp, 25, is "sexy as hell," says the source, while Kemp describes the singer as "a very nice, good girl," his agent Dave Stewart tells Scoop.

Warren Beatty

SLEPT WITH ALMOST 13,000 WOMEN?!

According to a new biography (see page 56 for a review), before he wed Annette Bening in 1992, Warren Beatty bedded nearly 13,000 women—not including "daytime quickies, drive-bys ... stolen kisses, and so on." Beatty's attorney says the book is unauthorized—and untrue. If it were, Beatty would still be 7,000 ladies behind basketball great Wilt Chamberlain's 1991 self-proclaimed record.

Alexa Ray Joel

ON THE MEND

Alexa Ray Joel took to her Facebook page to squash rumors that her mom, Christie Brinkley, had anything to do with her Dec. 5 hospitalization. "She is the kindest woman I've ever known." The singer, 24, posted photos (taken by her mom) of herself mugging for the camera and cited "heartbreak-related depression." She wrote, "I just wanted to thank you all for the incredible outpouring of love and support."

A-Rod & Kate

THEIR BREAKUP FACT VS. FICTION

It was hot and heavy during playoff season—and then it was over. Since splitting last month, Kate Hudson, 30, and Yankee Alex Rodriguez, 34, have kept mum, but a Hudson pal says Rodriguez's talking to his friend Madonna while dating Hudson "didn't really bother her." Adds a buddy of his: "Kate wanted more than he could give her."

Brittany Murphy

MOURNING & MYSTERY

On Christmas Eve, after Brittany Murphy's funeral, her husband, Simon Monjack, and mother Sharon went into seclusion at the home they share in the Hollywood Hills. Through the holidays, the grieving pair "clung to each other for support," says Monjack's mother, Linda. "They've been keeping each other going."

But with no answers in sight about why the 32-year-old actress died suddenly of an apparent cardiac arrest on Dec. 20—toxicology results that could reveal any drugs in her system are still weeks away—several friends of Murphy spoke to PEOPLE urging a full investigation into her death. They're also raising questions about her husband's role in her short life. Says her longtime pal, director George Hickenlooper (who was once involved in a legal dispute with Monjack over a movie credit for his film Factory Girl): "We believe serious questions should be asked," adding, "We are very concerned about Sharon." Several sources say London-born businessman Monjack, 39, was disturbingly controlling, screening Murphy's phone calls and isolating her and her mother, who lived with them, from friends. Two sources say his behavior led to her being sacked from the thriller The Caller shortly before her death. (Her rep has denied she was fired.)

Monjack denies those claims, and even his detractors say he and Murphy were devoted to each other. A family friend says Monjack is no longer speaking to media and is "waiting like everyone else for the report from the coroner, but anticipates the cause of death will be from natural causes."

Murphy's will was reportedly written before her '07 nuptials and left her estate to her mother. Yet by law, Monjack is entitled to whatever they earned while they were married, and possibly half of what she owned prior to their marriage. For now, Monjack is "taking it hour by hour," says his mother. "He's strong, and he's got Sharon."
