Howard Zinn, 87, author of the bestseller A People's History of the United States, died after suffering a heart attack while swimming in Santa Monica Jan. 27. His liberal views and writings have long been controversial, drawing charges of anti-Americanism from conservatives and praise from famous fans, including Zinn's family friends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (top right), who grew up near the influential professor's home.
