A German man who tried to blackmail supermodel Cindy Crawford, 44, and her husband, entrepreneur Rande Gerber, 47, was sentenced to two years in jail on March 9. Edis Kayalar, 26, confessed to trying to extort $135,888 from the couple last year using a photo of their daughter Kaia, 8, bound and gagged while playing Cops and Robbers with her former nanny, a friend of Kayalar's. • Former television producer Robert "Joe" Halderman, 52, pleaded guilty to attempted grand larceny on March 9 in New York City for trying to extort $2 million from David Letterman, 62. Halderman, who admitted that last fall he threatened to reveal details about the late-night TV host's dalliances with female staffers, will be sentenced in May to six months in jail. On his show, Letterman thanked authorities for handling the situation "professionally, skillfully and appropriately."
While competing in Milan March 14, David Beckham, 34, suffered a serious injury that will most likely keep him out of the World Cup tournament in South Africa later this year. After receiving a pass with his left foot during the closing minutes of the match, the British superstar gestured to his teammates before collapsing with a torn Achilles tendon. He flew to Finland for surgery the next day and is expected to be out of action for at least five months.
David Schwimmer, 43, will tie the knot with his girlfriend, Zoe Buckman, 24, in what will be the first marriage for both. The former Friends star and his photographer fiancée have not set a date for the nuptials.
Joseph Fiennes, 39, and his wife, Swiss model Maria Dolores Dieguez, welcomed their first child, a daughter, on March 8. The FlashForward star and the former beauty pageant contestant married last year in Tuscany.
Plácido Domingo, 69, was released from a Manhattan hospital on March 7 after undergoing surgery for colon cancer. The acclaimed tenor is expected to make a full recovery.
A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS
Merlin Olsen, 69, the Hall of Fame defensive tackle who parlayed gridiron glory into a television career, died of cancer on March 11 in Duarte, Calif. The All-American from Utah State was the NFL's Rookie of the Year in 1962 and spent 15 years with the L.A. Rams, anchoring the team's Fearsome Foursome in the mid-'60s. He later appeared on Little House on the Prairie and Father Murphy and was a color commentator for NBC's pro football and Rose Bowl telecasts.
