Hoisting Trophies Onstage and Bonding Backstage, the Stars Shared Cheers-and Tears-at the Kodak Theater
"This could be a dream," said Crazy Heart's famously laid-back Jeff Bridges (with Michelle Pfeiffer), accepting his first Oscar after four previous nominations. "I might wake up-maybe not. Not for a while, anyway."
TWO MEN AND AN OSCAR
"I think it went well," was Alec Baldwin's modest verdict on his cohosting with Steve Martin. "There was just enough of us."
Kathryn Bigelow made history as the first woman to win Best Director for The Hurt Locker ("I hope I'm the first of many"), then picked up a second statue when Hurt won Best Picture.
Mo'Nique told PEOPLE she hadn't prepared an Oscar speech. "Why? Because I think the universe would say, 'You have a lot of nerve!'"
Ben Stiller (who last year came onstage wearing a bushy beard and dark glasses to parody Joaquin Phoenix) this time dressed-and spoke-as an Avatar Na'vi.
READY, SET, CRUZ!
Penelope Cruz (backstage before presenting the show's first award, Best Supporting Actor) held hands in the audience with her boyfriend, actor Javier Bardem.
LA VIDA LOPEZ
Jennifer Lopez (backstage before presenting the award for Best Original Score) was followed everywhere by husband Marc Anthony, who carried her train after someone stepped on her dress.
Meryl Streep gave Best Actress Sandra Bullock a supportive pat as she made her way to the stage. Asked what congratulations she'd be offering, Streep said, "I've already stuck my tongue down her throat"-referring to their kiss at the Critics' Choice Awards in January.
