LIFE WITHOUT SANDRA
As much of the world knows by now, Jesse James has had a lot to apologize for in recent weeks. Still, on April 29, a paparazzi photographer was shocked to find himself on the receiving end of a mea culpa from the motorcycle king, who had just returned from a month-long stint at a treatment facility. After losing his cool with the lensman the day before, "Jesse seemed very humble," says the photographer. "He said he is tired of everyone thinking he is an a--hole and that he is really trying to be a better person."
In the wake of the cheating scandal that led his wife of nearly five years, Sandra Bullock, to file for divorce on April 23, James, 41, has made it clear that he desperately hopes to repair the catastrophic damage done to his marriage and children Sunny, 6, Jesse Jr., 12, and Chandler, 15. "He wants to put the pieces back together and work on being a good dad and a good partner [to Sandra]-"wherever that situation may end up," says a friend. "He's not going to stop loving her or working to make things better." Adds another source: "Jesse is not a person who gives up. He doesn't see the divorce as the final chapter."
But as Bullock, 45, embarks on a new life with Louis, the 3½-month-old son she is now adopting as a single mom, friends say James wants her to be happy. "I think he accepts that she's moving on," says his friend. "He wants her to feel some relief, some healing." The man who called Bullock "the love of my life" in a statement to PEOPLE is acutely aware of how much he has lost. James "doesn't want Louis to look back at this time when he's older and remember him for being a bad person," says his friend. Undergoing treatment (for unspecified issues) "couldn't have been easy" for James, his friend adds. "It's hard for him to open up."
James "is happy about being back" at work at West Coast Choppers, says a source. Now he fervently hopes to regain happiness at home. "He wants his wife, and that family they created, back more than anyone will ever know," says his friend. "You know that saying, -You don't know how much you'll miss something until it's gone'? It's like that. It's sad that it had to happen this way, but it showed him what was important in life. It showed him other issues he has to deal with to be a better person."
SANDRA'S BIG NEWS
Friends and neighbors react with joy
In the wake of Sandra Bullock's announcement to PEOPLE that she's now mom to 3½-month-old Louis Bardo Bullock-"who hails from New Orleans-the Big Easy is returning the love. "I'm thrilled for Sandra," says Saints quarterback Drew Brees. "Clearly she has embraced the city of New Orleans and appreciates what a wonderful and culturally rich city this is." The actress has continued to lie low, but close friends, including comedian George Lopez, share their happiness for her. "I am a proud uncle," he said at his George Lopez Celebrity Golf Classic on May 3 in Burbank, Calif. "Sandra is a loving, giving person. Louis could not be in a better home."
