Actor Colin Hanks, 32, and New York City-based publicist Samantha Bryant, 31, were married on May 8 in Los Angeles in a star-studded celebration that included guests Steven Spielberg, Reese Witherspoon and the groom's stepmom, Rita Wilson. The couple met through mutual friends and became engaged last June. Hanks is the son of Tom Hanks and his late ex-wife, actress Samantha Lewes, who died in 2002.
On May 8, the day before Mother's Day, Bethenny Frankel, 39, and her husband, real estate agent Jason Hoppy, 38, welcomed their first child, a girl they named Bryn, in Manhattan. During her pregnancy, the Real Housewives of New York City star told PEOPLE her spouse, whom she married March 28, wouldn't let her find out the baby's sex because "he knows I'll spoil it." But later on she tweeted, "I had a dream it was a girl."
Calling her "one of the nation's foremost legal minds," President Obama named Solicitor General Elena Kagan as his pick to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens on May 10. If confirmed by the Senate, Kagan, 50, would be the court's youngest justice and give it three female members for the first time in history. The former Harvard Law School dean said she was "humbled" by "this honor of a lifetime."
Oscar-nominated actress Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) (inset) and her husband, musician Renn Hawkey, both 36, will welcome their second child this fall. The new arrival will join big brother Fynn, 16 months.
In a surprise move that will spare her the death penalty, Sunday school teacher Melissa Huckaby, 29, pleaded guilty May 10 in Stockton, Calif., to first-degree murder in last year's killing of Sandra Cantu, 8, a playmate of her daughter's. The child's body was found stuffed into a suitcase in a pond near where both the divorced mother and her victim lived. Huckaby faces a sentence of 25 years to life in prison without the possibility of parole when she is sentenced June 14. • Pro football Hall of Famer and former Dancing with the Stars contestant Lawrence Taylor, 51, was charged in Suffern, N.Y., for third-degree rape of a 16-year-old runaway May 6. Taylor was released on $75,000 bail and, according to his lawyer, "did not have sex with anybody." Fellow season 8 DWTS contestant Melissa Rycroft told People, "It's not the LT that I knew."
TEEN CELEB BURGLAR GETS JAIL TIME
Alexis Neiers, 18, pleaded no contest in an L.A. courtroom May 10 to felony burglary and was sentenced to six months behind bars for a 2009 break-in at the Hollywood Hills home of Orlando Bloom (inset). Police say more than $500,000 in artwork and watches were pilfered from the actor. The other defendants in the case, part of a mostly teenage burglary ring that ransacked the homes of celebrities including Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, separately face a variety of other felony charges.
