Karolina KURKOVA

AT THE HOTEL DU CAP-EDEN-ROC

Heading to a party hosted by jeweler de Grisogono (which made her brown-diamond panther bracelet), the model described the legendary hotel-once frequented by the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald and now a hideaway for Hollywood's elite-as "so decadent, so chic but so beautiful."

Antonio BANDERAS & Salma HAYEK

AT THE CARLTON PIER

On the French Riviera to promote their movie Puss in Boots (out Nov. 4), Hayek loves Cannes because "I can see my husband [French businessman Francois-Henri Pinault]! And it's a great excuse to see friends like Antonio." Banderas joked, "Salma's the one with star power. I'm just an object, man." Said Hayek: "Yes, he's the sex object; I'm the brains."

Jessica CHASTAIN & Brad PITT

AT THE INTERCONTINENTAL CARLTON CANNES

Cannes was a reunion for Chastain and Pitt, who play husband and wife in The Tree of Life, winner of the festival's top prize, the Palme d'Or. "We haven't seen each other since we stopped filming three years ago," says Pitt. Chastain's goal at her Cannes premiere? Not to fall on the famous red-carpeted stairs. "I came close, but Brad and Sean [Penn] held me up."

Diane KRUGER

AT THE HOTEL MARTINEZ

Despite being in Cannes barely 36 hours, the L'Oreal Paris spokeswoman found time for romance: "My favorite restaurant in Paris, Thiou, is organizing a private dinner for Josh [boyfriend Joshua Jackson] and me." When she came to the festival in 2004 for the premiere of Troy, "I went from a complete unknown to the red carpet here. Photographers were shouting my name. I was shocked!"

Rob LOWE

AT THE HOTEL DU CAP-EDEN-ROC

Lowe (stepping out at the de Grisogono party) hit the scene as a movie mogul in the making: He's a partner in the newly re-formed Miramax Films. "Coming to Cannes was the perfect nexus of art and commerce," he said.

Bar REFAELI

AT THE HOTEL MARTINEZ

What does a supermodel bring to Cannes? Bikinis and couture, so "I'm prepared if it's a boat or red carpet," said Refaeli. Sadly, her jewelry-including a 55-plus-carat diamond ring-doesn't travel. It's all loaned by Chopard.

Dustin HOFFMAN, Jack BLACK, Angelina JOLIE

AT THE INTERCONTINENTAL CARLTON CANNES

Who's more animal friendly than the cast of Kung Fu Panda 2? After Black suggested "juggling croissants" for the photo, a flock of seagulls joined the party. No problem: "Let's just feed the birds," said Hoffman.
