For the past three decades, the actor has been doing just that. He's now 63, but Irons still rides "whenever I need to get somewhere" and has biked throughout Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Hungary, where he films his Showtime drama The Borgias (season 2 kicks off April 8). He first began riding in his 30s and was instantly hooked. "I thought it was a good way to get around," Irons says. "I ride horses, and the motorbike gives you similar freedom. You're very in touch with all your senses, and it's quite dangerous. So you have to concentrate." His wife of 34 years, Irish actress Sinead Cusack (their youngest son, Max, 26, stars in the upcoming film The Host), wasn't as enamored the first time she saw his new toy: the night he picked her up at a London train station. "She was wearing a miniskirt and high heels," he recalls with a laugh, "and we had to travel about 45 miles to get home."
No matter: Irons has biked with famous buddies like Laurence Fishburne, Lauren Hutton and the late Dennis Hopper, all of whom helped form the Guggenheim Motorcycle Club in 1999. Biking up to 300 miles a day, "we have done rides all around the world: Russia, Spain and the Emirates," says Irons. And whenever he wants to escape the spotlight, strapping on his helmet has another benefit too. "It's a great disguise," he says. "No one can see who you are!"
