Dario Franchitti, 39, won the Indianapolis 500 on May 27, becoming only the 10th driver in nearly a century to win the race three or more times. Franchitti took his wife, actress Ashley Judd, 44, on his victory lap, along with Susie Wheldon, 33, the widow of his friend Dan Wheldon, who won the race last year and was killed in a racing accident in Las Vegas last October.

MARRIED

It was a wedding in the city for actress Cynthia Nixon, 46. The Sex and the City star and her girlfriend, education advocate Christine Marinoni, 45, married in Manhattan on May 27. The couple, who became engaged at a pro-same-sex-marriage rally three years ago and have a son Max, 1, wanted to wait until it was legal for them to tie the knot in New York. Nixon, who has two children from her relationship with photographer Danny Mozes, 46, wore a custom dress designed by Carolina Herrera, 73.

BABY

While Jenna von Oÿ, 35, says that she and her computer-data consultant husband, Brad Bratcher, 41, "are exhausted," the former Blossom star admits that they are "enjoying every moment" since the May 21 birth of their daughter Gray Audrey.

DIED

Actress Janet Carroll, who portrayed Tom Cruise's mother in his 1983 breakout movie Risky Business, died May 22 in New York City after a long illness. She was 71. Carroll (inset) also had a recurring role as Al Bundy's boss in Married ... With Children. • Peter Jones, the drummer for the band Crowded House-known for such hits as "Don't Dream It's Over"-died in Melbourne, Australia, May 18 of brain cancer at age 45. The band said in a statement: "We remember him as a warmhearted, funny and talented man."

LEGAL MATTERS

Singer Justin Bieber, 18, is wanted for questioning by the L.A. Sheriff's Department for allegedly hitting a photographer who was taking photos of him and his actress girlfriend Selena Gomez, 19, as they were leaving a shopping center on May 27. • Raffaello Follieri, 33, the ex-boyfriend of actress Anne Hathaway, 29, who pleaded guilty in 2008 to wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering after falsely telling investors he had links to the Vatican, was released May 25 after serving time in a federal prison in Loretto, Pa., and deported to his native Italy. While incarcerated Follieri "focused solely on his education, charitable endeavors and physical transformation," his rep told The New York Post. He is now "expected ... to resume his role at the helm of the Follieri Group."

NAVAL ACADEMY PIONEER DIES

In 1949 Wesley Brown-who died May 22 in Silver Spring, Md., at age 85-became the first black man to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy, despite enduring racial harassment. He did have his supporters, including upperclassman and future president Jimmy Carter, 87. Brown, who received a lifetime achievement award from Vice Adm. Jeffrey Fowler in 2009, went on to serve in the Korean and Vietnam wars. "It's important for America to remember Wesley A. Brown," said historian Robert Schneller Jr. "He was a pioneer like Jesse Owens and Jackie Robinson."
