JOHNNY DEPP AFTER THE SPLIT

What breakup blues? Johnny Depp "was laughing, smiling and taking pictures with kids," says rancher Laura Dalton, who met the actor at an autograph session in Creede, Colo., on June 22, three days after he officially announced that he and longtime partner Vanessa Paradis were splitting. "He seemed very happy." Depp, 49, made the most of his time in the tiny mining town while filming a portion of the mega-budget The Lone Ranger, dining at the Far Dog restaurant and picking up a vintage smoking jacket and carved stone skulls at the Rare Things Gallery. A world away, Paradis, 39, spent her post-split week reconnecting with old friends in her native France and making plans for life after Johnny. (A real estate source tells Scoop that Paradis has already rented a new home in Beverly Hills for her and the couple's children Lily-Rose, 13, and Jack, 10.) "She seems totally relieved," says a source close to the actress-singer. "There's [not] a lot of sadness." The couple of 14 years, who last shared a red carpet two years ago, "were rarely together for a while," adds the source, "and only for the sake of the kids." Even before the official announcement, rumors linked Depp to his Rum Diary costar Amber Heard and his publicist and constant companion Robin Baum. (Reps for Depp wouldn't comment on the rumors.) For now, Depp and Paradis are focused on making the transition as smooth as possible for Lily-Rose and Jack, who will spend some of the summer in France. With Depp frequently away on location, "Vanessa is the one who cares for them on a day-to-day basis," says a Paradis pal. Even so, the children are in constant contact with their dad, says another friend: "The kids adore him."
