Picks and Pans: Movies
Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Nate Parker | R |
Like an anniversary present, Arbitrage arrives 25 years after Wall Street to tell the tale of Robert Miller (Gere), a mogul so dirty, you can almost make out "greed is good" in tiny script pinstriping his bespoke suits. But Arbitrage is no throwback. It creates exquisite tension and thrust by highlighting what has changed in the past quarter century: namely, us regular folk and our tolerance for white-collar creeps.
Though Miller swans around New York pretending he isn't hiding a $400 million hole in his company's books, he has even bigger troubles after covering up an accident. So he calls Jimmy Grant (Parker), the son of one of his late employees and the only black guy (or 99 percenter) he knows. The principled Jimmy helps Miller out of loyalty but with a fiery indignation and disgust that's entirely relatable to anyone enraged by corporate bailouts. Their intertwined fates-and Parker and Gere's weighty performances-elevate the film as it expertly manipulates us into wanting Miller to get off. But don't forget about Sarandon, terrific as a society wife who's far classier than her husband and wilier than she lets on. Maybe what Wall Street really needs is more people like her and Jimmy.

Why worry? The voice of Finding Nemo 3D's paranoid papa fish still finds good reason
IS DOING A VOICE FOR A CARTOON THE EASIEST GIG EVER?
I wouldn't call spending five hours a day playing a fish who's panicked about losing his child easy. You really feel that worry envelop you. I'd go home and just sit there, like, "[My God,] what happened to me?"
DO YOU WORRY AS MUCH NOW AS YOU DID WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER?
The stuff that bothers you at 25 does not bother you now. But now when I get a pain in my calf, I get a little more worried. Every little pain is like, "Uh oh, this is the big one!"
ARE YOU A SAFETY-FIRST GUY? DO YOU WEAR A BIKE HELMET?
I do now. I don't like it. I guess the helmets are good, but personally, it makes me want to ride really fast to see what it would feel like to fall. You get something like that, you kind of want to use it.
WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT THE ORIGINAL PREMIERE OF NEMO?
I took my son [Jacob], who was 4 at the time. He got so freaked out, he ran out after 30 minutes. He was hearing his father's voice, thinking, "Am I Nemo?" And when the mother was killed, that was too much.
HE SHOULD DO A LITTLE BETTER THIS TIME OUT.
No. Now he is almost 14, so he'll just run out of the theater to text.
ALL THE SINGLE LADIES
Already an on-demand and iTunes hit, Bachelorette may look like Bridesmaids, but it's more like the female Hangover. Becky's (Rebel Wilson) bridal attendants (Lizzy Caplan, Kirsten Dunst and Isla Fisher) are druggy mean girls who mock her, ruin her dress, then try to fix it. Frankly, I can't even see why they're pals.
FOR A GOOD TIME, CALL ...
Raunchy (but fully clothed), Call is delightfully naughty and funny. College enemies Katie (Ari Graynor) and Lauren (Lauren Miller) move in and start a phone-sex line when they can't afford rent. Their burgeoning friendship put a fun twist on rom-com clichés, adding sweetness to a salty movie.
