She had just three days to go before giving birth-and still Reese Witherspoon was all smiles. As she and a girlfriend slowly browsed their way through Barneys New York in Beverly Hills Sept. 24, the actress's face lit up when they made a stop in the baby section. "Reese was in a great mood," says a witness, adding that she sweetly "kept a hand on her belly."

In the early-morning hours of Sept. 27 at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, the Oscar winner, 36, and her husband, high-powered CAA talent agent Jim Toth, 42, got the joyful moment they had been waiting for as they "welcomed Tennessee James into their family," her rep said in a statement. Their little boy's name is a nod to his mom's proud Nashville roots. "Both Mom and baby are healthy, and the entire family is thrilled."

The couple, who married in March 2011, were eager to have a child together (Witherspoon is already mom to Ava, 13, and son Deacon, 8, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, 38) as soon as possible after their wedding. Witherspoon "was very open with her kids about her plans to expand the family," a source told PEOPLE earlier this year. For Toth, a first-time father, there were minimal nerves. "He was just over the moon and really eager to become a dad," says a Witherspoon friend. "Jim has been a rock of stability and normalcy and a great partner to her, who has stepped up but never overstepped as a [stepdad] to her kids with Ryan."

After filming the drama Devil's Knot this summer, Witherspoon spent time nesting at their Brentwood, Calif., home (a new nursery is all ready), visiting her family in Nashville and cheering at her kids' soccer games. "She made an effort to spend special time with both kids before the baby arrived," says a source. "She has been very relaxed about her pregnancy and enjoyed it. Jim always assured her that she looked gorgeous." Adds her friend: "She felt great all the way through."

Now she's soaking up every minute of bliss with her new baby boy. "Reese definitely feels settled in her family life with Jim and her kids," says her friend. "They can't wait to start life with their new baby."
