If Princess Kate
had the slightest new-mom jitters about spending her first night away from her 7-week-old son, she sure had the room fooled. Glittering in a clingy, sequined Jenny Packham gown - her smile betraying just a hint of up-all-night weariness - the mother of Prince George charmed the crowd alongside her husband, Prince William
, at the Tusk Conservation Awards in London on Sept. 12. "They were remarkably relaxed," says Charlie Mayhew, CEO of Tusk Trust. "I don't think they looked at their mobile [phones] all night!"
The couple's ease may have come from knowing that George was in the capable hands of the newest addition to their staff: William's own former nanny Jessie Webb, 71 (see box). Two days after the benefit, Kate, 31, briefly left George at home again to shop for baby clothes with her mom, Carole, while William, 31, served as best man at the wedding of close friend James Meade. Then on Sept. 15 it was off to visit great-grandparents Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip at Balmoral estate in Scotland. Now that George is rounding the 2-month mark, his "roar," as William described his son's wail, is tempered by his first smiles, as proud uncle Prince Harry
recently revealed. And more milestones await: The family is expected to settle into their home in Kensington Palace this autumn, and George's christening is set for October. In the meantime, one possible godmother, aunt Pippa Middleton, couldn't help but gush about her nephew. Says a fellow guest at Meade's wedding: "She was saying how gorgeous he is."
