NEWLY SINGLE SOFIA VERGARA
SEXIEST BACHELORETTE ALIVE!
SOFIA VERGARA KNOWS how to make a statement. Over the weekend, the sexy TV star took to social media to announce two things. The first was that she and fiancé Nick Loeb, 38, had split. "Nick and I have [decided] to be apart," the Modern Family actress, 41, wrote May 23 on WhoSay. "We have [been] having too many problems with figuring out how to spend time together, and [because] of my work and now his, it's been getting worse and worse, not fun anymore. We are still very close but we [believe this] is the best thing for us." The second was that she wouldn't let a breakup get her down - a message she delivered via some sultry selfies taken during outings in New Orleans with family and friends.
Those who know the couple weren't surprised by the development. Though Vergara was seen giggling with Loeb, an entrepreneur and former politician, as recently as the White House correspondents' dinner on May 3, a source says that their four-year romance has been on its last legs for some time. "They were both addicted to their fiery relationship, but they have been on the outs for a while now," the source tells People. "It's hard for them to have a normal relationship, much less spend time together. It has been worse since she became a superstar, but they were always on rocky ground."
Indeed, this isn't the first break for the couple, who took a brief hiatus from their relationship in May 2012. "Sofia needs her space," said a source at the time. But less than three months later, Loeb proposed to Vergara in front of friends and family during a lavish Mexican getaway for her 40th birthday.
Yet after two years they still had to make concrete wedding plans, with Vergara often citing her schedule. "There was no bitter feud," says a Vergara insider. "Their relationship didn't make sense anymore, and it was just a realization that they couldn't make it work."
GEORGE & AMAL
WEDDING PLANS HEAT UP!
Looks like George Clooney
and Amal Alamuddin aren't the long-engagement types. A source close to members of Alamuddin's family says the pair are planning an Italian wedding in September - likely someplace more secluded than Clooney's beloved Lake Como - followed by a party near Alamuddin's Lebanese hometown. And their friend Cindy Crawford appeared to confirm the news. When asked by Paris photographers if she was in town last week for Clooney's wedding, she replied, "It's in September." Meanwhile, Clooney, 53, and lawyer Alamuddin, 36, are back at work: The actor is expanding his Satellite Sentinel Project to monitor human rights abuses in Africa, while Alamuddin is representing ex-Libyan spy chief Abdullah Al-Senussi. But there's still time for romance! Clooney rejoined his fiancée in London, where they were spotted on May 24 at the Berkeley Hotel, "talking very quietly and looking quite serious" over a bottle of rosé, says a fellow diner. Was it about international relations - or the guest list?
FROM PERMS TO PING-PONG!
SUSAN SARANDON SOUNDS OFF
THE ACTRESS AND TABLE TENNIS SOCIAL CLUB OWNER, 67, STARS IN THE '80s-ERA COMEDY PING PONG SUMMER (OUT JUNE 6)
ON HER AWKWARD TEEN YEARS
I was one of the brainy kids. Not cool at all. Then in my senior year, in a fluke, I made the cheerleading squad. Too bad Rocky Horror wasn't around until later, because I could have found like-minded souls there.
ON '80s TRENDS
I never had a bad perm, though my hair's naturally curly, so I probably always looked like I had. Maybe I started that trend. As for '80s music, I was more Soul Train than American Bandstand. I liked '70s stuff like the Doobie Brothers and Stevie Wonder.
ON CELEB PING-PONG PLAYERS
Jamie Foxx, Ed Norton and Prince are all very good. Even Jack Kevorkian! When he came to town after he got out of prison, he played all night. Some people get obsessed, but I never play to win. If I have to get competitive, I freeze.
5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
1. He was destined to be an artist.
I was named after Ansel Adams. My dad is a photographer, and our house has photos everywhere. My mom is an opera director, and they were both totally behind me when they heard I wanted to be a performer.
2 . sk him to speak in a funny voice - or to paint.
Growing up, I was a ridiculous ball of energy who spoke in weird voices and loved to act out. And I wanted to be a lot of things. When I'm not acting, I compose electronic music under the name Ansolo. I also love to paint. I paint on rocks and make these 25-mm. figurines called Warhammer. They're like an army of soldiers that you use in a game. I'm kind of like [Steve Carell's] character from The 40-Year-Old Virgin
3. It's his movie and he'll cry if he wants to.
Since doing The Fault in Our Stars
, I've become a very emotional guy, because I got so used to flexing my crying muscles. I'm not afraid to cry in front of people, and I cry a lot watching movies. East of Eden always gets me. I'm a mess!
4. He has loyal fans who call themselves Anselites.
It's so weird! I get recognized every day. When girls scream my name and start crying, I blush like crazy. But I know they're doing it because of the book and not really because of me.
5 He's taken - and has a type.
I like girls who are smart, funny and trusting. [He's dating his high school sweetheart, dancer Violetta Komyshan.] My celeb crush is Charlize Theron
. If I met her, I'd shake in my boots!
