On the TV front, ABC's hip new hit Desperate Housewives scored with nominations as best comedy series (up against Arrested Development, Entourage, Sex and the City and Will & Grace) and nominations for Marcia Cross, Felicity Hoffman and Teri Hatcher (who'll compete against Sarah Jessica Parker and Debra Messing).
Back on the big screen, Martin Scorsese's long-gestating Howard Hughes biography, The Aviator, came in second, with six nominations – including those for best dramatic feature, two acting nominations (lead Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett, who plays Katharine Hepburn) and best director.
Mel Gibson, on the other hand, failed to receive a best foreign language film nomination for his The Passion of the Christ, which was also shut out of the acting competition.
