The Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave a terrific 37th birthday present to Ray star Jamie Foxx on Monday morning – nominating him for a Golden Globe award not only as best actor in a musical or comedy for his biopic of music legend Ray Charles, but also shining a supporting dramatic actor nod on him for Collateral and another one in the TV movie or miniseries category, as best actor in Redemption.

The quirky road comedy Sideways led the movie roster, with seven nominations, including best musical or comedy film, three acting nominations (Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church and Virginia Madsen) and best director Alexander Payne

On the TV front, ABC's hip new hit Desperate Housewives scored with nominations as best comedy series (up against Arrested Development, Entourage, Sex and the City and Will & Grace) and nominations for Marcia Cross, Felicity Hoffman and Teri Hatcher (who'll compete against Sarah Jessica Parker and Debra Messing).

Back on the big screen, Martin Scorsese's long-gestating Howard Hughes biography, The Aviator, came in second, with six nominations – including those for best dramatic feature, two acting nominations (lead Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett, who plays Katharine Hepburn) and best director.

Mel Gibson, on the other hand, failed to receive a best foreign language film nomination for his The Passion of the Christ, which was also shut out of the acting competition.

The 62nd annual Globes ceremony – to honor both movies and TV – will be broadcast live on NBC on Jan. 16.

Robin Williams was named this year's recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, for career achievement.
