Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling has given birth to her third child, a baby girl, born Sunday night in Edinburgh, the author's U.K. publisher has announced.

The infant, who has yet to be named, is the second child for the writer and her husband of three years, Dr. Neil Murray. Their first child, David, will turn 2 in March.

A spokeswoman for the Bloomsbury publishing company said: "Both parents are thrilled and mother and baby are doing well," Reuters reports.

Rowling, who will turn 40 this July 31, already has a daughter from a previous marriage, Jessica, born in 1994. Last year the author, in announcing her pregnancy, told fans on her Web site that she always wanted three children and "could not be happier."

The sixth entry in the young wizard series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is due to be published on July 16.
