Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau
Former elementary school teacher Mary Kay Letourneau, 43, and her former student, Vili Fualaau, 22, plan to wed on April 16, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports, relying on an online department-store bridal registry.
A friend confirms the upcoming marriage, according to the paper.
The couple's relationship – which began in 1996, when Fualaau was 12 and Letourneau was a 34-year-old married mother of four – resulted in her serving a 7 1/2-year prison sentence for child rape, during which time she gave birth to her second child by Fualaau.
Their two daughters, now 6 and 7, are both being raised by his mother.
Not long after Letourneau was released from prison last August, she and Fualaau successfully petitioned to have their no-contact order lifted. She now lives with friends south of Seattle, while he is unemployed yet studying for his GED, says the paper.
Speaking about the upcoming nuptials, Noel Soriano, described by the Post-Intelligencer as a longtime family friend, says: "It's been long overdue. It's going to be fabulous, seeing them get hitched finally. ... They have gone through a lot. That they lasted this long proves how strong their love is."
