Blake, 71, was rushed from the Los Angeles courtroom by his lawyers after secret recordings were played of him talking to an unknown visitor in jail, with his wails even heard from out in the hallway, the Associated Press reports.
He later regained his composure and returned after five minutes, looking pale. No explanation for the breakdown has been given.
Among the remarks Blake, who has pleaded not guilty to murdering his wife Bonny Lee Bakley in May 2001, was heard saying included, "Those monsters will never get her." The reference reportedly had to do with his late wife's family accessing the couple's child, the prosecution claims.
Prosecutor Shellie Samuels also played a 2003 TV interview Blake did with Barbara Walters, in which he related how he and Bakley had been getting along well and were working out their problems. He also told Walters that that there had been plans for Bakley's family to move to California.
The defense is due to begin its case Tuesday.
