Vin Diesel Pacifies New Fans at Box Office
Vin Diesel's family comedy The Pacifier was hot among moviegoers this weekend, while the reception to John Travolta's Get Shorty sequel Be Cool was, well, cool.
Diesel's vehicle took in $30.2 million, according to studio estimates, compared to $23.5 million made by Travolta's critically savaged romp, though it was the star's largest weekend opening, reports the Associated Press.
The success of The Pacifier is being credited to audiences wanting to see the action star fit a new image. In this one he plays a former NAVY Seal turned babysitter. The comedy earned an average $9,653 per theater, well ahead of Be Cool, which averaged $7,307.
Keeping its grip on third place, the Will Smith romantic comedy Hitch made $12.5 million, bringing its four-week tally to an impressive $138 million. Meanwhile, last week's No. 1 flick, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, slipped to fourth place.
Finally, in one after-effect of last week's Oscars, Clint Eastwood's 12-week-old Best Picture Million Dollar Baby earned $8.5 million for fifth place, a boost from $7.2 million and No. 6 in last weekend's rankings. The also-ran, The Aviator, dropped out of the top 10, to place 11th with $2.3 million.
The weekend's Top 10, according to estimates, were as follows:
1. The Pacifier, $30.2 million
2. Be Cool, $23.5 million
3. Hitch, $12.5 million
4. Diary of a Mad Black Woman, $12 million

7. Cursed, $3.9 million
8. Man of the House, $3.5 million
