RELEASED: Former President Bill Clinton, 58, was released from New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Monday, four days after surgery to remove fluid and scar tissue that accumulated in his chest after his heart-bypass operation last September. "Hillary, Chelsea and I are very grateful to the medical team that cared for me at the hospital and we deeply appreciate all the prayers and good wishes we've received in recent days," Clinton said in a statement. He is expected to recuperate in his home in Chappaqua, N.Y. The normal recovery time is four to six weeks, say doctors.
REPLACED: After breaking her foot during the pre-Broadway Chicago run of the musical Sweet Charity last weekend, former Married ... With Children star Christina Applegate, 33, is being replaced by actress Charlotte d'Amboise, who is currently starring as Roxie Hart in the New York production of Chicago. "I'm so sad for Christina," producer Barry Weissler tells The New York Times, "but it's time someone paid attention to Charlotte d'Amboise." Weissler expressed some hope that at some point Applegate (whose singing received downbeat reviews) may return to the production, which is scheduled to begin previews on Broadway April 4, with d'Amboise in the lead.
CANCELED: After one season, Jane Pauley's highly anticipated daytime talk show is being closed down because of disappointing ratings, NBC Universal Television has announced. The former Today and Dateline NBC host, 53, noted that her audience has grown steadily since November "but it came far too late for too many (stations) to stick with us," reports the Associated Press. The show had seemed like a sure thing after 148 of the nation's top 150 markets agreed to air her show before it even started, an unusual vote of confidence.
PROSECUTED: Lil' Kim repeatedly told a grand jury "preposterous" lies, a federal prosecutor told jurors in New York Monday as she urged them to convict the singer of perjury for her eyewitness account of a 2001 gunfight outside a radio station. "Maybe she really believed she was the queen bee, that she was above the law," Assistant U.S. Attorney Cathy Seibel said during closing arguments, AP reports. Kim (real name: Kimberly Jones), 29, and her personal assistant have pleaded not guilty to perjury, obstruction of justice and conspiracy.
DIED: Danny Joe Brown, 53, lead singer of the Southern rock band Molly Hatchet ("Flirtin' With Disaster"), died of complications from diabetes on Thursday at his home in Davie, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale, his family said. "He had been in the hospital for about four weeks before he died, and he wanted to come home and he was home for 30 minutes when he died," his sister, Lyndia Brown, tells AP. "He was surrounded by his children and his wife."
SETTLED: Former U.S. Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif., has settled his $11 million defamation suit with Vanity Fair writer Dominick Dunne for an undisclosed sum and an apology from the writer, according to reports. Dunne had made claims about Condit's role in the disappearance of Federal Bureau of Prisons intern Chandra Levy in 2001. According to California's Sacramento Bee, Dunne, in a prepared statement, said he did not "say or intend to imply that Mr. Condit was complicit in her disappearance, and to the extent my comments may have been misinterpreted, I apologize for them."
ARRESTED: In the morning show wars, the latest battle involves Good Morning America booker Mike Nagel, who was briefly handcuffed by Atlanta police on Monday after he refused to leave the background of a live shot on Today, says the Hollywood Reporter. Both shows were competing to be the first to interview Ashley Smith, who during the weekend survived a hostage ordeal at the hands of accused multiple killer Brian Nichols. Before the Today cameras, while Smith (in Atlanta) was being interviewed by Matt Lauer (in New York), Nagel reportedly talked heatedly over his cell phone with GMA staffers in New York and then argued with Smith's attorney and a Nichols case investigator. Nagel was subsequently cuffed and released, with ABC News saying he faces no charges.
