An apple and an orange have done in Hilary Swank, as the double Oscar winner was penalized in a New Zealand courtroom Wednesday for bringing the forbidden fruit into the country, which has strict quarantine laws to ward off unwanted insects.
Losing her bid for an appeal, the Boy's Don't Cry and Million Dollar Baby Best Actress, 30, was issued notice of a fine for failing to declare her snacks while arriving from Los Angeles on Jan. 15, reports the Associated Press. She later appealed the penalty.
But the Manukau District Court rejected Swank's appeal, and she must fork over $142 in fines plus an additional $21 for court fees.
In seeking to have her fine expunged, Swank reportedly wrote the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in a handwritten letter: "After my 20-hour flight I simply forgot I had one orange and one apple. I do apologize sincerely."
