Fans of American Idol cast 32.5 million votes Tuesday, signifying the highest number of votes outside a finale – and the end of the road for hopeful Jessica Sierra, it was announced Wednesday on the FOX talent hunt.

The 19-year-old from Tampa seemed to have a problem with consistency. Having earned some praise along the way from the usually harsh judge Simon Cowell, on Tuesday's show Sierra delivered her version of LeAnn Rimes's "On the Side of Angels." Judge Paul Abdul opined: "Coming off of last week, when you really blew me away, this song didn't really showcase how good your vocals are."

Said Sierra: "Each show is a stepping stone to what I've been trying to become – a star."

Besides Sierra, the bottom three consisted of Miami's Nadia Turner and Anwar Robinson of East Orange, N.J.

The results differed from the latest PEOPLE poll, in which Anthony Federov was picked as next to go, with 34 percent of the vote, followed by Scott Savol (25 percent). Just 4 percent of PEOPLE voters thought Sierra should go.

For this week's competition, Turner, 28, ditched the Mohawk haircut that turned heads (and some stomachs) last week, and she sang Melissa Etheridge's "I'm The Only One." "A thousand percent improvement over the horror we saw last week," Simon said.

Robinson, 25, belted R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly," which Paula loved, while Randy Jackson and Simon didn't, at least not all of it. Said the latter: "If we're judging you on the first half of the song, it's just not good enough. But you rescue yourself with the big note at the end."

Nine contestants remain.
