Female Fan Mail for Inmate Scott Peterson
San Quentin inmate Scott Peterson has been receiving as many as 25 pieces of mail a day in the month since his arrival on Death Row, the majority of the messages from "mainstream America" and supportive, says San Quentin spokesman Vernell Crittendon.
"Much of that mail is from people who do not know Scott Peterson personally and most of them are females ... Three of them I recall were actually wedding proposals to him." Crittendon tells the Associated Press, adding: "There have also been a number of media requests for interviews."
New York's Daily News also quotes Crittendon as saying, "A lot of women writing to Mr. Peterson believe he is innocent or think he is very handsome."
Peterson, 32, convicted of murdering his wife Laci and their unborn child, "has been adjusting to prison life on death row rather well," Crittendon said. Last week, Peterson was approved to go out and begin exercising in a walk-alone caged area that is only barely bigger than his cell.
While in his cell, said Crittendon, "He is doing a lot of reading, particularly mail."
Crittendon explained that to meet his women admirers, Peterson needs to respond to them with a visitor's questionnaire. Once the questionnaire is returned, prison officials review it for a possible security clearance to visit the former fertilizer salesman.
