Pounding the promotional trail last week for his new movie A Lot Like Love, Ashton Kutcher carefully skirted questions about any pending marriage plans with Demi Moore but said tantalizingly: "If we are the No. 1 movie in America, I will do a Calvin Klein underwear campaign."

Well, the 27-year-old actor can keep his pants on.

Far from being No. 1, Kutcher's romantic comedy, which costars Amanda Peet, premiered in fourth place at the weekend box office, earning a disappointing $7.7 million, according to studio estimates.

Well ahead of it in the ticket-selling race were Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn in the political thriller The Interpreter (No. 1, with $22.8 million), the cheesy horror flick The Amityville Horror (No. 2, $14.2 million) and the Matthew McConaughey-Penelope Cruz parched desert adventure Sahara (No. 3, $9 million).

The poor showing of A Lot Like Love, which received mixed reviews, even took its distributor Disney by surprise, say industry reports. Expectations were that the movie would at least break the $10-million barrier.

Still, Kutcher can take some solace in that his other movie, Guess Who, an update of the Katharine Hepburn-Spencer Tracy 1967 classic Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, remained in the Top 10. It was No. 8, with $3.5 million, and has to date earned $62.4 million.
