Actress Cameron Diaz is suing a British tabloid over a story that suggested she had an affair with the married producer of her MTV reality show, Trippin'.

Diaz's attorney, Simon Smith, says the actress has instructed his firm, Schillings, to begin libel proceedings against publishers of The Sun newspaper, which ran a story suggesting Diaz had an intimate relationship with producer Shane Nickerson, the Associated Press reports.

The story followed the publication of photos online and in a supermarket tabloid this week purportedly showing Diaz and Nickerson kissing – though shrubbery and shadows obscure all of the woman's face in the shot and a good deal of the man's.

The law firm accused the newspaper of "falsely alleging that (Diaz) had embarked upon a secret affair with a married man."

Diaz's rep Brad Cafarelli tells PEOPLE: "Shane Nickerson is a friend and associate of Cameron's, who works with her on her MTV show, Trippin'. They do not have any sort of romantic relationship whatsoever."

In his own online blog, Nickerson expressed shock (and a good sense of humor) over the rumors and accompanying photos, calling it a "ludicrous story."

"In fact," Nickerson writes, "I told my wife, 'One of the reasons this is so stupid is because you know that if I was hooking up with CD you'd have been the first one I high-fived.'" Nickerson adds that the Mrs. "laughed because she knows me."

The law firm Schillings is also representing Timberlake in a suit against Britain's News of the World tabloid over a story claiming he cheated on Diaz.
