While FOX Idol-ed, ABC helped viewers get Lost on Wednesday night, although those tuning in were left hanging as to who or what is hiding in the sealed concrete shaft that was blown open at the end of the first-season finale.
And that was just one of the mysteries.
Starting off with high-school science professor Dr. Arzt (Daniel Roebuck) blowing himself up with unstable dynamite found in the shipwrecked vessel – just as he is explaining the dangers of the explosive – the episode contained several flashback scenes presenting the cast of characters before they boarded the doomed airliner from Sydney.
The main thrust was a harrowing trek through the jungle to reach the mysterious shaft that included a near-fatal attack on Locke (Terry O'Quinn) by the still-unseen creature who's been haunting the survivors.
Young Walt (Malcolm David Kelly) was taken away, too – by pirates. So much for the plan of Walt's dad Michael (Harold Perrineau), who was hoping to set sail to safety with Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) and Sawyer (Josh Holloway).
But back to that shaft. Before Locke could blow it open, Hurley (Jorge Garcia) discovered that numbers on the side of it are the same fateful lottery numbers (4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42) that have been haunting him – and seem to be significant for everyone on the island. Not that they are explained.
Nevertheless, Locke blows open the hatch – and the last thing viewers see is Jack and Locke looking down into a long chute that seems to go on forever, with a ladder that crumples away near the top. On to next season.
