"He died so beautifully and so gracefully that literally this morning I don't feel grief, I don't feel loss," his son, former actor Edward Albert, told the AP, adding that he held his father’s hand as he died.
Before costarring with Eva Gabor on Green Acres, Albert was an accomplished movie actor, usually playing the sidekick, as he did to Gregory Peck’s journalist in the 1953 Cinderella story Roman Holiday.
The film, in which Albert played a photographer, earned him an Oscar nomination and an Oscar for the movie’s new star, Audrey Hepburn.
Albert was also nominated for his stern father role in the 1972 comedy The Heartbreak Kid.
His other movies included Oklahoma! (as the Persian peddler), The Teahouse of the August Moon, The Sun Also Rises, The Longest Day, Carrie and the original The Longest Yard.
Albert was a tireless conservationist and environmentalist who traveled the world for UNICEF and crusaded for endangered species and other causes. He also established Plaza de la Raza, a foundation in East Los Angeles that teaches arts to poor Hispanics and helped Dr. Albert Schweitzer combat famine in Africa.
"Acting was a tenth of his life. The majority of his life was committed to helping other people," said his son. "This guy was, from the absolute depth of his soul, one of the true heroes of our world."
In addition to his son, a daughter, Maria Albert Zucht, and two granddaughters survive Albert. The actor’s wife of 40 years, the actress Margo Albert, died in 1985.
