When the couple separated this past March, their publicist released a statement to PEOPLE saying that the decision was mutual. "The couple will remain friends," the rep added.
In her divorce filing on Wednesday, Elizabeth, 31, cited irreconcilable differences. She and the 37-year-old Reitman, (whose movie credits include Drop Dead Sexy, and Choices) have no children, but they did have several pets and co-founded Animal Avengers, a nonprofit animal rescue organization.
The two married on June 15, 2002, on the beach in Jalisco, Mexico – and were making still making public appearances together in late February of this year, during Oscar weekend.
