Allegations of an affair between American Idol judge Paula Abdul and former contestant Corey Clark will be resolved one way or another, as FOX has hired an independent counsel to unravel the accusations.

In a move reminiscent of Washington, D.C., the network has retained the outside investigator to determine whether Abdul had an affair with Clark, and whether she advised him on his performances while he was a contestant on the show in 2003, the Associated Press reports.

Clark went public with his accusations this spring, and an ABC investigative special fanned the flames of what had transpired between Clark and Abdul.

FOX President Peter Liguori said Thursday that any allegations against American Idol are taken very seriously. Liguori called Idol's credibility "extraordinarily important to us," AP reports.

However, he stopped short of saying whether or not the show would fire Abdul if the allegations turned out to be true. But, said Liguori, the investigation is already well under way, and results from it are expected soon. So far, Abdul, Clark and other witnesses have been questioned, Liguori said.

But if FOX has any concerns about Abdul's involvement, the network isn't showing it. The bubbly Idol judge was recently part of another FOX talent show, So You Think You Can Dance, and Liguori said that auditions for the fifth season of Idol would proceed as planned in August.

For her part, Abdul has refused to address her relationship with Clark, telling reporters earlier this year that, "I never respond to lies."

In a statement released this spring, Abdul said, "All my life, I have been taught to take the high road, and never to dignify salacious or false accusations. And I have been taught never, never to lie. … Not only do I never lie, I never respond to lies, no matter how vicious, no matter how hurtful."

Clark was kicked off the second season of the show when it was revealed that he had an undisclosed prior arrest.
