Marc Cohn, a 1992 Grammy winner for his song "Walking in Memphis" and the husband of ABC news reporter Elizabeth Vargas, was shot in the head during an attempted car-jacking following a Sunday night performance in Denver.

The musician was struck in the temple when a man fired into his band's van in a parking garage. Cohn was treated at a hospital and released Monday as police search for a suspect, the Associated Press reports.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson tells AP that the bullet appeared to have been slowed by the van's windshield and by first striking the vehicle's driver, Thomas Dube, who also was treated and released.,

"Frankly, I can't tell you how he survived," Jackson said of Cohn, who reportedly was alert and talking when emergency workers arrived.

Police identified a suspect, 26-year-old Joseph W. Yacteen, who allegedly tried to stop Cohn's van in the parking garage after allegedly fleeing a downtown hotel Sunday night, where he had tried to pay his bill with a stolen credit card.

Yacteen is being sought on attempted first-degree murder, robbery and other charges. Authorities said he missed a court date July 15 on a drug and weapons charge.

In an interview with the Rocky Mountain News last week, Cohn said: "I like the road once I'm out there. ... But I spend most of my time these days being a dad. I have three kids, aged 14 to 2. It's a split personality when I'm leaving to go. I can't remember why I have to go and do this."
