Coretta Scott King, widow of civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is in fair condition after being hospitalized in Atlanta for an unspecified condition, the Associated Press reports.

King, 78, went to an emergency room Tuesday morning and was resting comfortably later in the day, said Piedmont Hospital spokeswoman Diana Lewis.

Without elaborating, Lewis said King was spending the night at the hospital for observation.

Because King, who is known to have a heart condition, has canceled some recent public appearances, concerns have been raised about her health.

At a June 30 ceremony paying tribute to the King family at the Georgia State Capitol, her son Martin Luther King III said his mother was "doing well" and was following doctor's orders to limit her activities. He declined to provide additional details.

The Kings married in 1953 and had four children. Continuing her husband's political activism since his assassination in 1968, Mrs. King recently denounced the war in Iraq and called for an end of homophobia in the African American community, as a means to halt the spread of AIDS.
