Jennifer Garner Lets Slip: It's a Girl
On Tuesday's Tonight Show, while telling Jay Leno about her and hubby Ben Affleck's impending arrival, Garner revealed in a highly noticeable slip that the baby is a "she."
"You can just start to feel really pregnant, like you are the hugest person on the face of the planet. ... I felt bigger and bigger like she ..."
Garner then quickly (and conscientiously) covered her mouth with her hands, and the crowd cheered.
She then paused, regained her composure, and took a sip of water. "Anyway …," she said. The actress and Leno then picked up their conversation.
On Wednesday, Ellen DeGeneres also made a slip about the sex of Garner's baby during her visit to the daytime show. DeGeneres gave Garner a "mommy and daughter costume" patterned after the spy outfits of her Alias character, Sydney Bristow – complete with a red wig, camouflage onesie and a miniature trench coat to hide from the paparazzi.
Aside from recent hints, Garner, 33, had been studiously evasive about revealing too much about the baby, due later this year. At the Emmys on Sept. 18, Garner, who was up for best dramatic series actress for her ABC show, admitted on the red carpet that she knew the sex of her child – but was keeping that fact all to herself.
That stance also jibed with opinions she earlier had expressed about being thrilled to be having a baby – but not thrilled with the "ugly" way that the public learned about it.
"It's so personal for me," Garner told InStyle magazine for its September issue, at a time when Garner was still irked that "the news of my pregnancy got out when I was in the middle of my first trimester. I hadn't even had a chance to tell my friends."
As a result of the press leak, Garner said she'd grown "hyper-protective" and that she's "uncomfortable with people reading too much about my pregnancy or my relationship."
