Cameron Diaz was everywhere this summer, from Hawaii – where she surfed with boyfriend Justin Timberlake – to a Los Angeles courtroom, where she triumphed over a photographer turned blackmailer. One place you haven't seen her, though, is in the movies – Diaz, 33, hasn't appeared on film since 2003's Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (although she lent her voice to Shrek 2). Now she's back, starring opposite Toni Collette and Shirley MacLaine in the new comedy In Her Shoes. She talked recently about her dream role (Sasquatch) and why she can't wait to get old.

What was it like working with Shirley MacLaine?
She's awesome. I love that woman. She's like any great athlete, like Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan – they make it look effortless. With Shirley, the truth comes out of her, and that's what I learned: When you're just as honest as you can be, the truth comes out.

Were you attracted to this film because of your character, the unconventional Maggie?
I don't take films based on characters, per se. I look at scripts as a whole. Oftentimes that gets me in trouble – like, how many times have I done a film where I've gotten tied up or I've had to get into cold water or I'm in a wedding dress? So I wasn't looking at Maggie going, "She's dyslexic, she's a whore. Yes! I want to play her." I knew I would be playing Maggie, but in this incredible story about these three women who were telling a universal story.

Do you relate more to Maggie or to Toni Collette's character, the more reserved Rose?
I'm a mixture of the both of them, certainly. I can really be completely irresponsible and procrastinate until the very, very, very bitter end. I can be the very nurturing one or I can be the one who doesn't really help. Well, that's not true – I hate causing trouble. I think it's because I spent so much time as a child causing trouble that now I don't want to.

How did you like filming parts of the movie in a Florida retirement home?
I can't wait to be that age and hanging out with a bunch of people all day playing golf and going to the beach. We'll be laughing and having a good time, driving golf carts around and getting loopy on our prescription drugs. If you're at that age and you're not hooked up to a machine laying in bed with your loved ones around you asking if you need anything, you're so lucky.

Did any of the older men flirt with you?
Of course they did. I flirted with them. I love it. I love older men. Oh my god. Totally.

You have an older sister, Chimene, 35. Ever try to steal her boyfriend?
No, no. That never really happened. The British are good at that. They are so incestuous. They pass around partners as if it was like popcorn in a movie.

How do you know that?
Well, I saw 10 minutes of Love Actually the other day and I was like, "Oh my god, he's in love with his friend's wife!" And also I have English friends – every time I show up, that person is now with that person and that person is now with that person. I don't get it.

What's your dream role?
I want to play Sasquatch. Do you think this'll open that up for me? Because I might be able to do Bigfoot. It's amazing what they can do with prosthetics these days. I don't know. After 12 years (of acting), I really don't know what I want to do. I'm just doing it as it comes along.
