"It's an amicable breakup," says Ling. "It was the right thing to do."
Ling, 32, who left the daytime talk show in December 2002 to host National Geographic's Ultimate Explorer, met Levine last year through mutual friends. The pair got engaged Feb. 18 in Rome. She told PEOPLE that the couple's busy schedules – including her work, which takes her all over the world – contributed to the decision to end their engagement.
Of her globetrotting job, Ling told PEOPLE in 2003, "It's not the most conducive lifestyle for a relationship by any means."
In her pre-View career, the California-born Ling spent seven years as a reporter for Channel One News, a satellite service for schools. She previously dated Die Another Day and The Fast and the Furious actor Rick Yune.
As for other upcoming projects, Ling has co-authored the new book Mother, Daughter, Sister, Bride: Rituals of Womanhood due out Nov. 1.
