Daniel Craig Touted As New James Bond
British actor Daniel Craig, in the news this week for being the possible cause of the final bust-up between Jude Law and Sienna Miller, has emerged as the frontrunner to be Pierce Brosnan's successor as James Bond. But don't start shaking the martinis just yet.
The London-based agent for the blond, 37-year-old Craig declined to comment, and a spokesman for Sony Pictures Entertainment, which will release the next 007 adventure, Casino Royale, said the company did not comment on rumors, reports Reuters.
Some reports stateside quote Bond series producer Barbara Broccoli as saying she wishes to put Craig through another screen test before closing any deal.
"The decision hasn't been made yet. They are casting and that takes however long it takes," said a spokeswoman for Broccoli's EON production company.
Only five actors have driven 007's Aston Martin since the first film in the series, "Dr. No," more than 40 years ago: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Brosnan, now 52.
As for Craig's resume, he was born in Liverpool ,England, and is considered more of a screen tough guy than pretty boy. His movie roles include that of the hitman son of Paul Newman's gangster in Road to Perdition; the poet Ted Hughes opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in Sylvia, Alex West with Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and a cocaine dealer named only XXXX in last year's Layer Cake.
Offscreen, Craig – who's divorced and has a teenage daughter – has been no less busy. This British press linked him to Miller, 23, on the rebound from her former fiance Law.
Last month, Miller and Craig were spotted having dinner together at London's Ivy before they each left the restaurant separately. But they reunited at the nearby Elysium nightclub and danced all night – until Craig dropped Miller off at her mother's house at 7 a.m.
"I'm going straight to my mum's place," Miller told the gathered photogs. "There's nothing going on between me and Daniel. We were in a movie together two years ago."
Meanwhile, reports the New York Post, last year troubled supermodel Kate Moss reputedly ditched Jefferson Hack, the father of her baby daughter, to be with Craig.
