Daniel Craig bested some serious competition to replace Pierce Brosnan as the new James Bond, but some British tabloids are wondering whether he has the right stuff for the legendary 007 role.

Craig, a British actor little-known to American audiences save for his relationship to Sienna Miller, reportedly earned the part over more recognizable names, including Hugh Jackman, Colin Farrell, Eric Bana and Ewan McGregor.

Craig's replacement of Brosnan was made official Friday, when the blond actor arrived at a London press conference on a Royal Marine commando boat – wearing a life jacket. That decidedly un-Bond move was compounded when Craig admitted that the ride had scared "the (bleep) out of me," MSNBC reports.

The actor's answers to reporters' questions didn't help. When asked why he wanted to play James Bond, Craig replied, "Why not?"

The London Mirror called Craig's performance at the conference "embarrassing," and one British television commentator said the 37-year-old actor "looks more like a banker that James Bond."

Craig will make his debut as the new 007 in the upcoming Casino Royale.
