Mariah Carey again proved herself the comeback kid by taking four honors at Saturday night's Vibe awards: artist of the year, R&B voice of the year, best R&B song ("We Belong Together") and album of the year (The Emancipation of Mimi).

"Whatever you're going through in your life, don't ever give up," Carey, 35, told those at the Los Angeles event, which was taped to be aired Tuesday on UPN.

Her prize-gathering marked a stunning snapping back for Carey, whose 2001 movie and album Glitter grounded her career and even cost her her record label.

Carey wasn't the only one getting awards who knows what it's like to go through a low period. Mary J Blige, who has survived bouts with substance abuse and depression, won the VLegend award for her 15 years in the music industry. After being presented her prize by producer Quincy Jones, she said: "Like a phoenix, I stayed strong and didn't kill myself."

Equally notable this year, where security was beefed up compared to last year's, was a lack of violence, reports the Associated Press. At the 2004 ceremony, violence overshadowed the show when audience member Jimmy James Johnson approached rapper-producer Dr. Dre, seated at a table in front of the stage, and appeared to ask for an autograph before punching him.

A chair-throwing melee ensued and Johnson was then allegedly stabbed by rapper Young Buck, whose real name is David Darnell Brown. (Brown, who denies the charge, remains free on bail as he awaits trial, while Johnson was sentenced to a year behind bars.)

Young Buck and Dr. Dre did not attend this year's ceremony. Other no-shows included winners Kanye West, named best rapper, and R. Kelly, who took the Reelest Video award for "Trapped in the Closet."
