Second-season American Idol contestant Julia DeMato , 26, was arrested and charged with drug possession and drunken driving in her hometown of Brookfield, Conn., over the weekend, the Associated Press reports.
Police said DeMato, who made the Top 10 on the FOX talent show, failed field sobriety tests after they discovered a dark SUV drive into a restaurant parking lot more than an hour after the restaurant had closed.
They said a search of her vehicle yielded two marijuana pipes and a small quantity of marijuana. Police also said a plastic bag in her purse contained white powder that tested positive for cocaine.
DeMato, in tears, told the News-Times of Danbury in a phone interview from her home that the incident was simply a misunderstanding.
"I am not a drug user," she said. "It's going to be taken care of in court, and that's that."
