Singer Lou Rawls, reportedly battling cancer of the lung and brain, is vowing not to give up, despite his dire situation.
"Don't count me out, brother," Rawls, speaking to the Arizona Republic, said Thursday night from his room at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. "There's been many people who have been diagnosed with this kind of thing, and they're still jumpin' and pumpin'."
The lung cancer was diagnosed a year ago and the brain cancer in May, Rawls's estranged wife, Nina, said during a marriage annulment hearing Thursday in Arizona, the Associated Press reports.
The singer, 72, lives in Scottsdale and says that he has received alternative and traditional medical treatments for his lung cancer. He said he quit smoking 35 years ago.
Still, says Nina Rawls, "By his doctor's admission, he is not expected to live much more." Lou Rawls's attorney, Robert L. Schwartz, has not discussed his client's prognosis.
The singer ("Love Is a Hurtin' Thing") has said in court papers that he is trying to annul his 2-year marriage and protect hundreds of thousands of dollars of assets that he contends his wife "absconded with," says AP.
Nina Rawls, 35, a former flight attendant who has worked as her estranged husband's manager since 2003, says she transferred nearly $350,000 into an account that she solely controls to prevent one of Rawls's two adult daughters from seizing the funds.
Rawls has sold more than 40 million albums and won three Grammys during a career spanning more than four decades.
