Boxing champ Oscar De La Hoya and his wife, Millie Corretjer, have welcomed their first child, PEOPLE has learned.

Their son, Oscar Gabriel, was born on Dec. 29 and weighed in at 9 lbs. 7 oz.

"It is with great joy that we share the arrival of our long awaited gift from God," the couple said in a statement. "We thank God that we are all healthy. We are now enjoying this moment with our family as we begin this new journey. In this season, we wish everyone much happiness and blessings just like we are enjoying ourselves with our son. Happy New Year! "

De La Hoya, 32, and Corretjer, a 31-year-old Puerto Rican pop singer, were married Oct. 5, 2001. The couple met in 2000, when both were signed to the same record label. (De La Hoya's debut CD that year earned a Grammy nod.) The boxer has two other children Jacob, 7, and Atiana, 6, from previous relationships.
