With nothing but praise for her boyfriend, French hotelier Andre Balazs, Uma Thurman also takes a backhanded swipe at her former husband, Ethan Hawke, in a newly published interview.
"It's lovely to have a man in my life who's cute, intelligent, interesting and complicated, and very supportive," the star, 35, tells InStyle magazine, as quoted in excerpts from the February cover story in New York's Daily News.
"Everyone constantly taunts you that rebound relationships aren't a good idea and that they don't work. But mine is working, surprisingly," she says of Balazs. "I feel like I'm in the right place and in the right time with myself. Everyone I love is healthy and doing pretty well, and that is so crucial."
Of her former marriage, which fell apart in 2004 after she and Hawke were together for six years (Thurman and Hawke have two children, daughter Maya, 7, and son Roan, 3), Thurman says: "Something that was constructed got unconstructed. But I feel grateful that the hard things have been survivable – I've been able to learn from them and grow."
And she's still learning and growing, she vows. "By the time I was 27, when I had my daughter, I felt I had danced on every tabletop – which I hadn't," observes Thurman, who also notes, "There are plenty of tabletops left … should I wish to dance on them."
