Another weekend, another possible harbinger of the Oscars, with top rivals Brokeback Mountain and Crash both winning top honors from the Writers Guild of America – for best adapted and best original screenplays, respectively.
George Clooney and fellow Good Night, and Good Luck screenwriter Grant Heslov were given an honorary award for a screenplay whose spirit embodies constitutional and civil rights issues.
Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee's cowboy romance, leads the Oscar race with eight nominations and has a script by Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry, based on a short story by Annie Proulx. Crash, which is up for six Oscars, was co-written by its director, Paul Haggis, and Bobby Moresco.
In other award news, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit swept the 33rd annual Annie Awards, which honor animated films. Wallace hopped off with honors for best feature, directing, writing, character animation, character design, animated effects, music, production design, storyboarding and voice acting.
In the technical achievement area, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride received the Ub Iwerks Award, named after a landmark Walt Disney collaborator.
