Brown, who was in town for his daughter's high school cheerleading tournament, was stopped for a routine check that revealed two misdemeanor charges of unlicensed operation of a vehicle and having an uninsured motor-vehicle trailer, Webster Police Chief Timothy J. Bent said.
Bent said Brown and his bodyguard were allowed to drive to the station following the event. He was held for about an hour and released on a $40 bond. Bent described Brown as "very cooperative."
"He was very forthright in wanting to clear this up," Bent said. "He probably didn't know he had this."
Brown's attorney didn't return calls.
Brown lives in Alpharetta, Ga., with wife Whitney Houston. He also has two children with Kim Ward of Stoughton, Mass.
