Natascha Kampusch, the Austrian girl who was abducted eight years ago and escaped last month, says in her first major interview that she contemplated fleeing all the time.

"All I thought about was escape," Kampusch tells the Austrian weekly, News, "but I couldn't take a risk."

Kampusch, who was kidnapped off of a Vienna street in 1998 when she was 10 years old, says she tried to figure out a way to free herself from the clutches of her abductor, Wolfgang Priklopil, but feared the consequences.

"The danger in a failed escape attempt would have been that I would never be allowed out of my dungeon," says Kampusch, who was locked in a 6-ft-by-10-ft windowless room beneath the garage in Priklopil's suburban home most of the time. "I had to win his trust successively."

At the same time, Kampusch says was overwhelmed by the unfairness of her situation. "I asked myself over and over again: Why me? Of all the millions of people in the world, why did this had to happen to me?" Kampusch, who is now 18, tells the magazine. "I kept having the thought, 'I couldn't possibly have been born just to let myself be locked away and have my life ruined.' I despaired at this injustice. I always felt like a poor hen in a chicken coop."

On Aug. 23 when Priklopil told her to vacuum his BMW, and stepped away to make a phone call, Kampusch took a chance. She left the vacuum on and, unheard amid the roar, fled to a neighbor’s.

As for her health, Kampusch is 5-foot-3-inches tall, weighs 93 lbs., and has a heart problem, for which she is being treated, according to the report in News.
