Avril Lavigne is no fan of the paparazzi, but she admits she could behave better around them.

The singer, who turned 22 last Wednesday, has offered an apology on her Web site after reportedly clashing with – and spitting at – photographers in Los Angeles recently.

"I'd like to sincerely apologize for my behavior with the paparazzi," she writes. "It's trying at best dealing with their insistent intrusions. I meant no offense to my fans, whose relationship I truly value. I have and will always go out of my way for my fans. My behavior was a reaction to the persistent attack from the paparazzi."

Lavigne, who married Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley this summer, reportedly squared off with the paparazzi at L.A.'s Hyde nightclub on two separate occasions last month – including one while she was celebrating her birthday.

Fame, and the intense scrutiny that comes with it, have always been a source of some frustration for Lavigne. She told PEOPLE in 2004: "It's not easy always being in the public eye, but that's what comes with the job. You just learn to deal with it and try to get as much privacy as possible."

It's been a busy year for the young singer. She and Whibley were married at a private estate in Montecito, Calif., in early July. She has also been preparing her third album and gave voice to a possum in the animated film Over the Hedge.
