Academy Award-nominated director Gus Van Sant was arrested Thursday in Portland, Ore., on a drunken driving charge.

Van Sant was pulled over and arrested at 1:48 a.m. Thursday after an officer noticed the headlights on Van Sant's black Porsche SUV were not turned on, as was first reported by The Smoking Gun.

"His eyes were watery and red and glassy," Portland police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schmautz tells PEOPLE. "His speech was slurred and he smelled of alcohol."

A breath test revealed that Van Sant, 54, had an alcohol level of .19, or more than twice Oregon's legal limit of .08 for a driver.

Attempts to reach Van Sant, who lives in Portland, were unsuccessful.

After failing the field sobriety test, Van Sant was taken to the Multnomah County jail. He is scheduled for a Jan. 17 court appearance.

Van Sant was nominated for an Oscar for the 1997 drama Good Will Hunting. He is also known for such indie classics as Drugstore Cowboy and My Own Private Idaho. He is currently filming his latest movie Paranoid Park in Portland.
