Lawyer Rejects Ryan O'Neal's 'Self-Defense' Claim | Ryan O'Neal
Ryan O'Neal was not acting in self-defense during a scuffle with his son Griffin O'Neal, whose pregnant girlfriend suffered "blunt head trauma" during the altercation, a lawyer for the couple said on Wednesday.

JoAnne Berry, who is due at the end of March, required eight stitches for head and eye injuries, the lawyer, Gloria Allred, said at a news conference in Los Angeles.

"We vigorously reject any assertion that the injuries suffered by JoAnne and Griffin were a result of Ryan O'Neal's acting in self-defense," Allred told reporters.

The elder O'Neal, 65, who was arrested on assault and weapons charges early Saturday morning, has claimed that Griffin swung at him with a fireplace poker, which missed and hit Berry.

Police said at the time of the arrest that O'Neal assaulted his son in a domestic dispute.

Griffin O'Neal, 42, an actor and musician, and Berry, a student, attended the press conference, but did not speak. Berry's left eye was bandaged and the area around it was bruised.

The case is still under investigation and formal charges have not yet been filed.

The fight occurred when Ryan O'Neal came home from a birthday party for former girlfriend Farrah Fawcett, who had recently been declared cancer-free after months of treatment.
