"We're just friends," Slater told PEOPLE last week at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Tournament, adding that he and Diaz, both 34, met "a few years ago" when he appeared on her MTV show Trippin'. (He joined her for a 2005 conservation expedition to Honduras.)
Asked how Diaz is doing in the wake of her recent split from Justin Timberlake, Slater said: "She's doing well."
Slater, an eight-time world champion surfer, and Diaz were spotted catching some waves together in Hawaii last month. Though Slater calls his native Florida home, he also has a house on Oahu's North Shore.
At Pebble Beach, he also said that golfing has been valuable when it comes to riding the waves. "It helps remind you when you're not doing so well that there's always another hit," he said. "And that's true of surfing too."
