For Candy Spelling, what's the best thing about reconciling with daughter Tori? "Having my whole family back together again," she tells PEOPLE. "It's kind of nice."

What prompted the reconciliation? "It was a lot of things," Spelling said Thursday at a party for son Randy's new A&E reality show, Sons of Hollywood.

"I think it started long before my husband passed away, and I think both of us losing him – her father and my husband – I think that made a big difference."

Now that the two have patched things up, "It feels great," Spelling said. "There's nothing more binding than family. What can I say?"

The thaw between mother and daughter – who also has a new reality show, Oxygen's Tori & Dean: Inn Love – happened "privately," Randy Spelling, 28, told PEOPLE. "Not on TV and in reality shows and in magazines. You know what? Things bring you together, and that was something that brings you together."

Also bringing the family together: The March 13 birth of Tori and husband Dean McDermott's first child, Liam Aaron McDermott.

"She's home with him right now," Candy, who says her new nickname is "Candy Gram," told reporters of her daughter and "fabulous" new grandchild. She says she hasn't yet decided on her favorite part of being a grandmother: "It's only been three weeks. Right now I'm just like, 'Want to see the pictures?' "
